
Trump to hit US car imports with 25% tariffs; former US economic advisor warns of volatility
The window left for negotiation remains key for the market to understand the impact of tariff policies, according to experts speaking at HSBC’s summit in Hong Kong this week; overnight the White House has announced 25% tariffs on cars from April 3 and car parts from May 3.

US president Donald Trump said he will announce a new series of tariff policies on April 2, targeting a broad range of the US’s major trading partners. Details of the new levies to be put in place remain unclear, despite Trump saying some countries will receive a tariff reprieve, and that sector-specific tariffs might be delayed as reported.
